Finding my PR Feet

Ellen Rayns has been an intern at Arch Communications for a month now. Here, she shares what it’s like to be the newest member of the Arch Comms team.

I’m a month into my internship at Arch Communications and so far it’s been a massive learning curve.

As my background is in fine art, the story of how I got here is slightly unorthodox. For our degree show, I was in charge of the advertising and PR. This was the time I applied for the internship here at Arch as I really enjoyed my role in the degree show’s committee.

So here I am, one month in.

Looking back, walking in on my first day was slightly surreal; I had only graduated the day before. Still, the team made me feel very welcome and put me at ease straight away. They gave me time to get to grips with the little things, like the online stuff whilst trying to remember how everyone likes their coffee.

The team have been amazing in how they have been so patient with me. As I don’t really have any experience of PR, they’re always willing to give advice and feedback which helps me learn a great deal more.

I’ll be honest though, at first I felt like a fish out of water. Getting to know the different projects was slightly mind boggling, but I started to pay attention to conversations and with a few questions it quickly made sense.

This past month at Arch, I’ve tried my luck at lots of different things, such as press releases, internal comms posters, social media – the list goes on. It has been really useful to be given a mix of jobs to do so I have had a taste for lots of different parts that play in PR. I love the fact that no day is the same here, I’m leaning so much and I can’t believe how much I’ve done already!

So a huge thanks to the team at Arch Comms for being so lovely to me, as they are making all this learning a lot of fun. Let’s see what the next month brings!
